If the Yankees are going to make the playoffs, the starters need to pitch better to help the bruised and battered bullpen. CC Sabathia‘s performance didn’t help today. The Yankees are going to need some outside help to help keep their deficit where it is as they fell again in Boston to the Red Sox 5-1.

The Sox got the scoring started in the second. Mike Napoli reached on a single, and when Mark Reynolds air mailed the throw, moved to second. Jonny Gomes followed with a walk. Daniel Nava bunted them over and Will Middlebrooks groundout brought home run number one.

They then added to it in the third. Dustin Pedroia singled and was bunted over to second. David Ortiz double made it 2-0. Two more singles by Napoli and Gomes made it 3-0.

The Yanks would get their lone run of Jon Lester in the fourth. Curtis Granderson led off with a triple and scored on Robinson Cano‘s groundout. The Sox got the run back in the bottom half. David Ross singled and Xander Bogaerts walked. A double play would move Ross to third and he would score on Shane Victorino‘s single.

The Napoli and Gomes show continued in the fifth. Napoli walked to lead off the inning and went to third on Gomes’ double. Nava would drive in Napoli with a sac fly.

YGY Player Of The Game: Lester

The Yanks look to avoid the sweep tomorrow as they face the Sox for the final time in the regular season. Ivan Nova will oppose Clay Buchholz at 8:05.

Notes: Alfonso Soriano was scratched with a sprained thumb 10 minutes before the game. He’s day to day. Derek Jeter was placed on the 60-Day DL and David Phelps was activated off it to give the bullpen a boost.
