Where would the New York Yankees be without Hiroki Kuroda? Kuroda continues to show that he is the team’s ace as he matched zeroes with Dodger ace Clayton Kershaw. The Yankees were able to piece together a rally in the ninth inning though, as they managed to split the two game series with the Dodgers.

Derek Jeter led off the ninth inning with a walk off Ronald Belisario and Eduardo Nunez pinch ran for him. Robinson Cano grounded out to erase Nunez but reached first. Alfonso Soriano‘s groundout moved Cano to second. Ichiro Suzuki was intentionally walked. Lyle Overbay pinch-hit for Brent Lillibridge and faced Paco Rodriguez. Overbay delivered a single to make it 1-0. Mark Ellis‘ error on Jayson Nix ball brought two more runs home for extra insurance.

YGY Player Of The Game: Kuroda

The Yanks are off today as the head to San Diego for the weekend to take on the Padres. CC Sabathia will face Andrew Cashner at 10:10.

Notes: The trade deadline came and went with the Yankees not making any moves. The waiver period begins and teams can still make trades until August 31 to for players to be eligible for the postseason. Alex Rodriguez will re-start his rehab process today. He will play in a simulated game and then the Yankees will decide where to put him after that. Curtis Granderson will return on Friday (more on that later today). The Yankees will honor Mariano Rivera on September 22nd against the San Francisco Giants. Rivera got a fishing rod from the Dodgers as a retirement gift.
