The New York Yankees (54-48) continued to make headlines this week, but mostly off-the-field. On a good note, they are close to acquiring another former Yankee, Alfonso Soriano from the Cubs, to help out their outfield. The offense desperately needs the help considering they have not hit a home run since returning from the All-Star Break. On a bad note, the Alex Rodriguez news continues on as A-Rod went on WFAN to say he does not trust the Yankee doctors, who said he had a grade 1 strain in his quadriceps and told him he can not play in a simulated or rehab game till August 1st. That being said, New York was able to earn a split from the Texas Rangers, including another great pitching performance from Hiroki Kuroda in the finale. Now, the Bronx Bombers will look to gain some ground in the division and the wild card as they return home this weekend.

The Tampa Bay Rays (60-42) continue to be the hottest team in the American League. They are 17-3 in the month of July and have crept within a half game of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. Outfielder Wil Myers has been a spark plug for the Rays. He has eight multi-hit games in his last ten contests and has been put into the cleanup spot by manager Joe Maddon due to the struggles of Evan Longoria. That being said, Tampa’s strength is their pitching, led by 14-3 Matt Moore and the return of David Price to his ace form in the rotation. This is a Rays team that has most people thinking they can win the AL East. It doesn’t help the Yankees that CC Sabathia, who has a 7.29 ERA against the Rays this season, pitches on Friday to open the series.

On this edition of the Yanks Go Yard Series Preview Show, presented by BaldVinny.com, I talk about the potential return of Derek Jeter on Saturday, the Soriano trade, and more A-Rod news. Then, David Hill from Rays Colored Glasses joined me to talk about the Rays’ success, the pitching matchups, James Loney continuing to hit over .300, Fernando Rodney‘s consistency, and the potential of Tampa making any trade deadline moves. Plus, we discuss BioGenesis, the Ryan Braun suspension, and much more.
