Yanks Go Yard Recap: Rivera Blows Save As New York Yankees’ Winning Streak Ends

Even the great ones have a rough day once in a while. For Mariano Rivera it was a rare off day for him. He came in with a one run lead and promptly gave it up as the Yankees fell to the Orioles 2-1, ending their six game winning streak.

Hiroki Kuroda made his first start in a  week due to a cranky hip and picked up  right where he left off. He went seven innings, giving up no runs and only three hits.

The Yankees lone run came in the second inning of Oriole starter Jason Hammel. Zoilo Almonte led off the inning with a walk and went to third on Lyle Overbay‘s single. Two batters later, Eduardo Nunez brought him home with a sac fly.

It stayed that way til the ninth of Rivera. With one out Nick Markakis singled. Adam Jones followed it up with his 16th homer of the year.

The Yankees begin a four game set with the Kansas City Royals. Jeremy Guthrie will face Phil Hughes at 7:05.

Notes: The Yankees claimed first baseman Travis Ishikawa off waivers from the Orioles and placed Kevin Youkilis on the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for him. Derek Jeter reached base three times and scored a run in his second game of his rehab stint in AAA. He DH’d in that game. Alex Rodriguez also DH’d but went 0-3 for class A Tampa. Michael Pineda was officially optioned to AAA. Curtis Granderson has been placed on the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man.
