Oakland scored two in the second off Phil Hughes when Josh Reddick singled and Brandon Moss followed with his 10th homer of the year. In the fifth, Eric Sogard led off with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, John Jaso doubled him in. Hughes didn’t finish the fifth inning, as the A’s batters made him work hard, drawing five walks.

The Yankees got the offense going in the sixth. With one out, Brett Gardner walked and Robinson Cano followed with a single. Mark Teixeira followed with a sac fly. In the seventh, Kevin Youkilis was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on Ichiro Suzuki‘s groundout and came home on Jayson Nix‘s single.

The A’s got insurance in the bottom half of the eighth. Moss led off with his 11th homer of the year. Sogard singled, stole second and came home on Jaso’s single.
