Sometimes the ace doesn’t have it early. This is what happens in a long season. Tonight, CC Sabathia didn’t have his best stuff early and it cost the Yankees, as they couldn’t recover from the four runs he gave up in the first as the Tampa Bay Rays took the first game of the series 5-1.

Ryan Roberts was the second batter of the game for the Rays and left the yard for his first homer of the year. After a strikeout, Evan Longoria singled, and Sean Rodriguez followed with an RBI triple. Yunel Escobar followed with his second homer of the year. Roberts would hit his second homer of the game in the third. The lone Yankee run came on Robinson Cano‘s sixth homer of the year in the fourth. Matt Moore only gave up one other hit, which was also to Cano, in his eight innings of working, walked three and struck out nine Yankees.

YGY Player of the Game: Cano

It doesn’t get easier for the Yankees as they’ll take on David Price tomorrow night. Phil Hughes will get the ball for the Yankees. First pitch at 7:05

Notes: Many Yankee notes on this Monday. Michael Pineda threw an inning in a simulated game today. Clay Rapada threw off a mound for the first time since Spring Training. Ronnier Mustelier played three innings in an extended spring game. Curtis Granderson began to hit off a tee. A spokeswoman for Cano’s charity was named as a client of Biogenesis. This DOES NOT mean that Cano was is any way shape or form involved with Biogenesis himself.
