I can definitely see Martin bring his average back up to the .240 mark by season’s end. If he’s hitting around 20 HRs a season, with good defense and a .220 BA, I’m OK with that.We’ve all been spoiled by Posada’s good offensive numbers and below-average defense for so long, it’s tough to see one of our hitters below the .200 mark…ouch!

@Chris_Carelli yeah I completely agree. I’m not sure he’s a .290 BABIP guy anymore, but he should definitely be hitting for a higher average than he is now.

@MHunterYGY Matt, to piggyback off your piece, http://yanksgoyard.com/2012/06/23/sabermetric-outlook-series-a-primer/ check out Martin’s BABIP (.212) versus a career mark including this season of .290. Should be an uptick soon. He’s accumulated 1.3 WAR YTD, so by the end of the season he should generate more than enough to warrant his contract.

@thatonemlbguy Right that has been a disappointment for Martin this season. Interestingly, though, he’s been fantastic in high leverage situations (ie when the game is on the line). So even though his RBIs are low, he’s been ok in the clutch. He could definitely make improvements on his game, but I’m not too worried about him.

@MHunterYGY Thanks for the comment! Yeah, Martin has been having at least in my mind, an average / below average season. While he is increasing his OBP and his number of walks, runners on (especially in scoring position) is something the Yankees have struggled with consistently all season. Granted Martin has scored 21 runs, so that’s something. His defense is always good so there’s no complaints there.

Martin has actually been surprisingly good this year. His batting average and RBIs are down of course, but he’s walking a ton, which is bringing up his OBP, and his power has been very good, especially his gap power. All in all he’s been an average hitter, but that’s pretty valuable as a catcher.
