Agreed. Like I said a few days ago (http://yanksgoyard.com/2012/06/15/bad-luck-and-the-yankees/), baseball fans have remarkably short memories. I do think that Phil Hughes isn’t, and will never be, a great pitcher, but he’s fine for a 5th starter, and I’m definitely not going to berate him for a bad start. To say that he doesn’t work hard or that he’s not trying to win is just ridiculous. Everyone wants to perform well and win, and Hughes probably does more than most since he plays for New York. So let’s look at the big picture, rather than critique every particular start.

Thank you for this post. People keep forgetting that Hughes is only 25 years old (turns 26 in a few days). I think fans need to stick with him and realize that not every young pitcher is dominate from age 21 to when they retire. He’s obviously taken a huge step from last year and I think he’ll take another huge step next year. Meanwhile, people are going to need to deal with growing pains…it’s a new thing for Yankees fans, as you pointed out, but it’s a necessary evil if the team wants to remain competitive.
