Yankees Minor League Report & Draft Update: June 6, 2012


Each Wednesday, we’ll provide a predominately notebook style review of what’s happening in the Yankees minor league system. This week we’ll finish off the column with a list of the players the Yankees selected in Rounds 16 – 40 during today’s final day of the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

International League North (AAA) – Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (32-27), 4th Place, 5 GB

  • 4-4 since last week’s report
  • Russell Branyan had two homers and 6 RBI in yesterday’s victory. It was his fifth game with the SWB Yanks after being promoted from Tampa.
  • Ramon Ortiz leads a struggling rotation with a 3.47 ERA.

Eastern League Eastern (AA) – Trenton Thunder, (32-24), T-1st place

  • 6-2 since last report
  • Cody Johnson leads the Thunder with 15 home runs
  • Thunder manager Tony Franklin won his 1,000th game on June 2, 2012

Florida State League (Advanced A) – Tampa Yankees (25-32), 5th place, 13.5 GB

South Atlantic League Southern (A) – Charleston RiverDogs (35-22), 2nd place, 5 GB

  • 4-3 since last week
  • Right fielder Tyler Austin, catchers Gary Sanchez (leading vote getter) and Francisco Arcia, starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell and reliever Pedro Guerra were named to the SAL All-Star team. The entire RiverDogs coaching staff was selected as well.
  • Sanchez has three homers and nine RBI in the past five games.

Dominican Summer League BC South (Rookie) – DSL Yankees 1 (2-1), T-2nd place, 1 GB

     Chris_Carelli I think Branyan hit another HR tonight…The guy is a beast. Not sure there’s room on the ML roster for him unless there’s an injury. Ibanez is actually one of the Yankees better hitters so far this season, so he’s not going anywhere. I wouldn’t be comfortable using him in the OF at all. Unless Ibanez hits .100 over the next few months or gets injured, Branyan is stuck in AAA.
     
    That lefty swing in Yankee Stadium would do some damage, for sure.

      He did homer again. He’s streaky, always has been. He’s in Triple-A for depth, and I agree with you that it takes a man or two going down before we seen him (until September of course).
