Russell, Nova, and Freddy: Thursday Yankees Links

  • The NY Daily News reports that Freddy Garcia is “ready to compete for the No. 5 spot.” Of course he is. What is Garcia supposed to say? “Thanks for the money, Yankees, but I’ll just settle into this spot on the bench for the next 8 months.” Somehow I don’t think that would fly.
  • Apparently Hal Steinbrenner is taking my “ignore reality” approach to Mariano Rivera’s inevitable retirement sometime in the future. Hal has no plans of chatting with Mo about his plans following the expiration of his contract this season.
  • The Yankees and Russell Martin have resumed talks about a possible 3-year contract extension. Of course, given the Yankees desire to bring payroll down to $189M by 2014 Martin will likely have to come to terms with the fact that he likely won’t get the type of money he might want.
  • River Avenue Blues would like to remind us that even though Ivan Nova isn’t CC Sabathia or Michael Pineda, but he’s a pretty great pitcher too.
