Not to be outdone by the Ohio State naming of Nick Swisher Field last week, Kalamazoo Central High School has named their field after Derek Jeter. For those who don’t know, the Captain grew up in Kalamazoo and attended Central High School, where he put up all kinds of awesome numbers on the baseball field to earn himself a pick in the first round of the draft in 1992. Jeter was inducted into Central’s athletic hall of fame in 2007, but it was only this week that the Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the name change of Central High School’s baseball field.
Really the only thing that is surprising about the renaming of the field is that it had not been done long before now. What does an All-Star 5-time World Champion, Rookie of the Year, Silver Slugger winning Gold Glover have to do to get a field named after him, anyway? Apparently becoming the 28th member of baseball’s 3000 Hit Club didn’t hurt.
