The Desert Dogs took on the Surprise Saguaros yesterday afternoon, picking up a 3-5 loss. A number of Yankees prospects took the field, including second baseman Corban Joseph and left fielder Rob Segedin, both of whom continue to struggle at the plate.
Joseph was 1-5 with a double and a strikeout, dropping his AFL average to an anemic .136. Segedin also had a rough day at the plate, going 0-4 with a strikeout and bringing his AFL average down to .227. Both Joseph and Segedin failed to deliver hits with RISP and 2 outs.
The Yankees pitching prospects fared much better and looked dominant in their relief appearances. Chase Whitley pitched a hitless, scoreless 3rd inning, striking out one and maintaining his perfect 0.00 ERA over 4.1 total innings pitched in the AFL. Preston Claiborne looked just as good in the 8th inning. Although he allowed 1 hit, he only needed 4 pitches (all of which were strikes) to shut the Saguaros down and get out of the inning without allowing a run. Claiborne’s AFL ERA now sits at 3.00 after a total of 3.0 innings pitched.
The Desert Dogs and the Saguaros meet for a rematch this afternoon at 2:35 PM EST.
