Yankees Only Need Derek Jeter for October
The Yankees won again last night as they beat Milwaukee for the second straight time. They continue to roll along with the best record in the American League and have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Red Sox in the division. What is amazing about the Yankees season so far is they can’t beat the Red Sox head to head, yet still lead them in the standings. They are 1-8 against them. The division would be practically locked up if they were able to beat them a few more times. Absent for the Yankees during all this winning is [...]
Brewers-Yankees Mega Preview!
For the second time in three series, Yanks Go Yard has collaborated with another great site on the Fansided Network to breakdown a huge series. This week is Reviewingthebrew.com talking with us about the first place Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew come into the Bronx in first place in the NL Central. Also, they boast one of the top hitting duos in Major League Baseball with LF Ryan Braun and 1B Prince Fielder. We decided to also keep with the daily podcasts as well. Below are both the questions I asked Colin Bennett about the Brewers. You can go to [...]
Russell’s regression
Through April 23, Russell Martin was hitting .333/.410/.722/1.132. It was clearly a small sample size — just 54 at-bats in 16 games — but we were all partying like it was 2007. He was coming off a two-homer, four-RBI game against the O’s and we were bracing for the second coming of Mike Piazza…with better defense. Since then, though, it has been all downhill. Martin finished April (including one game in March) hitting .293/.376/.587 with six homers, 19 RBI, four doubles, seven walks (12 Ks), 13 runs and 22 hits in 75 at-bats while going 2-for-2 in stolen-base attempts. In [...]
Book review: The Captain — The Journey of Derek Jeter
I know I’m a couple of months late on this, but I finally got around to finishing Ian O’Connor’s book The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter. O’Connor makes it known in the introduction that the book is his and Jeter had nothing to do with it, besides granting interviews. I can understand why he wrote that, seeing as how the whole thing is a slurpfest on Derek. Ian pretty much preforms literature fellatio on #2 throughout the whole thing, but it is a good biography that covers Jeter’s early life through his contentious contract negotiations this past offseason. Read [...]
Happy birthday Jeter!
Derek Jeter turned 37 today, which makes me feel old as hell. I’m sure he wishes he played, but I’m just glad the team got a win this afternoon. The Yanks still in first place (.5 game) and they rang in an emotional Old Timers’ Day with a victory. I’ll take it. To celebrate Jeter’s b-day, Michael Sokolove of the NY Times wrote this “touching” piece about the captain. It’s long and brutal, so read it at your own risk. I can’t understand why the team didn’t give you clubhouse access, Mike. Christ, get a clue.
Yanks get win on OTD
The Yanks grabbed a 6-4 win in their rubber match with the Rockies on Old Timers’ Day thanks to the long ball. The offense finally solved Juan Nicasio in the fifth inning as Robbie Cano broke up a perfect game with a one-out single to left. Swish Dog followed with a homer to right and Posada followed suit with a solo jaunt into the Yanks’ bullpen. It was just the third time this season that the Yanks have hit back-to-back homers, the last coming on May 8 at Texas when Jeet and Grandy went yard. The Yanks added a run [...]
A-Rod battling sore knee
A-Rod revealed after Saturday’s win that he has been playing through a right knee injury. The injury, which he suffered in last Sunday’s win against the Cubbies, is not considered serious and Al even said it’s getting better each day. Girardi called the injury a sore right knee and team doctors said that A-Rod won’t aggravate the injury by playing. If this is how A-Rod is playing with a sore knee, tell him to hurt the other one too. Over his last five games prior to today, the third baseman hit .526/.545/.684 with a .588 BABIP, five RBI, five runs [...]
CC first pitcher to 10 wins
CC was on as the Yanks rocked the Rockies, 8-3. The big guy went eight innings (and probably could have went the distance, he only threw 103 pitches) and gave up a run on seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. With his punchouts he moved into sole possession of 82nd place on the all-time list with his 1,880th K; he is now the active strikeout leader among lefties. Domination has been a recurring theme for CC (10-4) recently, in his last eight starts he is 7-1 with a 3.03 ERA. Following a Yankee loss, CC is 6-2 with [...]
Rockies-Yankees Podcast Preview
Tonight, the Yankees begin a 6 game homestand against the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies (37-37) have a top ten offense, but their starting pitching has been a huge problem and the reason why Jim Tracy’s club is in 3rd place in the National League West. They have a great combo in OF Carlos Gonzalez and SS Troy Tulowitzki. Plus, an old friend returns home in Jason Giambi. Below is my podcast where I breakdown the series and give my prediction. Send in your tweets or comments for the upcoming series’ and I will shout you guys out on upcoming podcasts! [...]
Jesus walks…a lot less than he did in 2010
Nathaniel Stoltz over at Seedlings to Stars took a look at the regression of the Yankees’ highly-touted prospect Jesus Montero. Nate makes some good points and I can’t say that I disagree with what he says. Nate:
