The Yanks announced today that Francisco Cervelli has a fractured bone in his left foot and will be in a boot for a least four weeks. Cervelli, a Yanks Go Yard favorite, injured the foot when he fouled a ball off it in Wednesday’s game; he stayed in but was eventually lifted an inning later. Odds are he will miss about a month and a half with the injury.
This doesn’t change things for Jorge Posada, as he’ll remain the DH, but you have to think that this opens the door for Jesus Montero to break camp with the big league club. It’s either him or Romine backing up Russell Martin, and Jesus is a little further along in his development.
Getting hurt in spring training has been a recurring theme for Frankie, as he broke his wrist in a home plate collision with the Rays (which stemmed from Shelley Duncan going hard into second base) in 2008. Then, last year, he was beaned in the head and had to wear that goofy helmet. Now this.
