Via MLBTR, and according to Tyler Kepner of the NY Times, Andy Pettitte told Brian Cashman that if he does pitch in 2011 he won’t be ready by Opening Day. He also told the GM “don’t count on me.”
However, that doesn’t mean the lefty is officially retired. The proverbial door has been left open for a Roger Clemens-esque return in June.
I don’t think he’s determined if he’s officially finished or not, but he’s chosen at this stage at least not to start in 2011. If that ever changes he’ll call us. We’re not going to hound him or bother him.
Worse news couldn’t have come for the pitching-depleted Yanks.
