Decisions, decisions
Now that the Yanks are in a tie with the Rays for the top spot in the division (although TB still owns the tie breaker), who would you rather they face in the ALDS: For those of you scoring at home, I want the Yanks to take the division. I don’t care who they play, I think they can beat anybody. LET’S GO YANKS!!!!
Yanks clinch playoff berth
Following a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays, the Yankees clinched their 49th postseason berth in franchise history. The decision not to rest CC paid off, as he threw a gem. The big guy went 8 1/3 innings (his second longest outing of the season) and gave up a run on three hits with eight strikeouts to two walks. Mo then came on and got the last two outs to nail down the victory. What’s interesting is that all six of the Yanks’ runs came on something other than a hit. The team recorded three sac flies, a run-scoring fielder’s [...]
Yanks need to sit AJ now
A.J. Burnett is now past the stage of just bad. He’s ventured into the stratosphere of the historically awful. Think Carl Pavano. Think Ed Whitson. Think Melido Perez. Yes, Melido Perez. With his horrendous, horrific, 2.1 inning, 7-hit, 7-run, 2-HR, 48 pitch disaster on the very mound that earned him a fat contract from the Yankees, Burnett became the first Yankees pitcher since Melido Perez in 1992 to lose as many as 15 games in a season. Perez loss 16 games that season, and could conceivably be called the “Lesser Perez” behind his brothers Carlos and Pascual – just [...]
AJ = Absolute Joke
The Yanks dropped a 7-5 game to the Blue Jays on Monday, but the good news is that the Rays also lost. So the Yanks remain a 1/2 game (one game in the loss column) behind TB for the top spot in the AL East. The Yanks’ magic number is still one, meaning that a NYY win or Red Cox loss puts the Bombers in the playoffs. AJ, yet again, looked like an asshole on the mound, giving up seven runs on as many hits in just 2 1/2 innings of work. In his second shortest outing of the season [...]
This reeks of desperation
It’s not like the Yankees to panic…at least not the Yankees we’ve become accustomed to over the last 10-15 years. That’s why today’s panic at the disco seems so strange and out of place. Spin it any way you want, but putting Phil Hughes on the hill tonight just days after announcing you were going to skip him in favor of Dustin Moseley is a panic move. Joe Girardi acknowledged to reporters that it could be perceived as desperate, but denied it saying, “People are going to look at it the way they want to. We’ve been trying to win [...]
Second place is the first loser
Following a 10-8 setback to the Sox the Yankees fell a half game behind the Rays for the lead the AL East. I’m not too upset about the loss because the Yanks fought back from a 10-1 deficit and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning; much can be said about that. Plus, they have a 6 1/2-game lead over Boston in the Wild Card standings with eight games to play (Sox have nine left). In theory, the Sox could sweep the final five games they have against the Yanks (God forbid) and still not make [...]
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue
Not only did I fall to 7-1 on Wednesday, but the Yanks got smoked on Thursday night and now lead the division by a 1/2 game. Some interesting stats from Thursday: CC went 5 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts to three walks. The seven ER were his most as a Yankee; he had not allowed that many since 4/16/08 as a member of the Indians. Joba had allowed just five inherited runners to score all season. He let three score on Thursday. Javy hit three batters in a row. The last time [...]
Right back at it
On Tuesday I moved to 7-0 at Yankee Stadium in 2010 via an 8-3 shellacking of the Rays. The hitters ripped Panty Shields (see what I did there?) while Phil was less than Philthy. Regardless, the team now owns a 2 1/2-game lead in the division with magic numbers of 3 (wild card) and 10 (division). Like a true warrior, I will get right back to the grind tonight and attempt to make it 8-0. I’ve never done back-to-back games in my life, although I have done two games in three days. I’m looking forward to two tilts in as [...]
1 1/2
On a night when the Yankees honored George Steinbrenner with a plaque in Monument Park, the team honored him with an 8-6 victory over the Rays. In doing so, they now own a 1 1/2-game lead in the division and dwindled their magic number to clinch a playoff spot down to 5. The MN to clinch the division is 12. The hero of the game was Curtis Granderson, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and drove in a career-high-tying five runs. It was his seventh career multi-homer game and third this season. Grandy has a seven-game hitting [...]
HUGE four-game set coming up
The Rays are coming to town for a four-game set starting Monday. It will, of course, be an imperative series as the Yanks lead them by a 1/2 game in the AL East. Here are the pitching match-ups for the series: *Monday: SuperNova (1-0, 4.30) vs. Matt Garza (14-8, 3.88) Tuesday: Philthy (16-8, 4.31) vs. Panty Shields (13-12, 4.86) Wednesday: AJ (10-13, 5.08) vs. Wade Davis (12-9, 4.19) Thursday: CC (20-6, 3.05) vs. David Price (17-6, 2.79) *If you are going to Monday’s game please get there early. The team is unveiling a monument in Monument Park for George Steinbrenner [...]
