Jim Joyce does his best Don Denkinger impression

Yeah, the Yanks crushed the O’s 9-1 behind another strong outing from Phil Hughes. Sure, they won their fourth in a row. No doubt, Robbie Cano is hot as a bastard. But none of those things are the story of the night.

Holy shit. If this (fast forward to about the 3:40 mark) isn’t a cry for the greater implementation of instant replay, I don’t know what is. At least Jim Joyce issued an apology, which is commendable (I bet you’d never see that kind of class from Joe West):

"I just cost that kid a perfect game. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay. Biggest call of my career, and I kicked the shit out of it."

Classy indeed. It’s great he is sacking up and taking responsibility for his gaffe, but it doesn’t excuse not getting the call right.

TIME TO MAN UP, SELIG. FANS WANT MORE INSTANT REPLAY AND WE WANT IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize for straying from the Yankees, but this umpiring faux pas (not just Joyce’s, but also from the 9th inning of the Rays/Jays game on Tuesday and MANY others from recent memory) really grinds my gears. I’m not a fan of the human element. I’m from the belief that you should get the call right no matter what.
